5 killed as bus rams into crowd in Faridpur; 4 vehicles torched

A bus rammed into a crowd and killed at least five people and injuring several others at the Dhaka-Khulna highway in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur on Saturday night.

The accident occurred around 8:00pm near Soyadi bus stand area, when a bus named Narail Express ran over locals who had gathered on the road to collect eggs spilled from an overturned pickup van.

According to witnesses, an egg-laden pickup van overturned on the highway around 7:45pm. Soon after, local residents rushed onto the road to salvage the scattered eggs.

A speeding Narail Express bus then ran over the crowd, killing several people on the spot.

Highway police recovered five bodies from the scene. Following the incident, angry locals set fire to the bus along with at least three other vehicles.

Abu Jafar, station officer of Bhanga Fire Service and Civil Defence, said residents had rushed to help after the pickup van carrying eggs met with an accident, when a bus coming from the opposite direction ran over them, killing several people. He said the exact death toll could not yet be confirmed.

Md Helaluddin, officer-in-charge of Bhanga Highway Police Station, said, “Five bodies had been recovered so far, but the death toll may be higher. Rescue operations are ongoing.”

The injured have been admitted to different hospitals. The identities of the deceased and injured could not be confirmed immediately.
