Police have recovered the body of an 18-year-old college student and housewife, Sanzida Akter Maria, from a rented flat in the South Goran area of Khilgaon in the capital.
Her husband, Saiful Islam, has been detained for questioning in connection with the incident.
The body was sent to the morgue of Dhaka Medical College Hospital for an autopsy after legal formalities were completed at around 11:30pm on Friday (10 July).
Maria was the daughter of Md Mohsin of Hatkanda Nayapara village in Araihazar Upazila of Narayanganj. She was a student of Lalmatia Mohila College.
According to family members, Maria married Saiful Islam, a resident of Homna Upazila in Cumilla, about eight months ago after they developed a relationship.
Saiful works for Foodpanda, and the couple had been living in a rented apartment in South Goran since their marriage.
Inspector Md Faruk, in charge of the police outpost at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, confirmed the incident.
The victim’s brother, Chan Mia, said he repeatedly tried to call his sister at around 7:00pm on Friday but received no response.
He then contacted Saiful, who told him to check the apartment. Upon arriving at the rented flat in South Goran, he found Maria lying on the floor. Saiful was not present at the time. Police were later informed and recovered the body.
Police said black marks were found on Maria’s neck.
Investigators said it is too early to determine whether the death was a suicide or a homicide. The exact cause of death will be known after the autopsy report is received. Saiful Islam has been detained for questioning as part of the investigation.
