Bangla Academy on Sunday expressed profound sorrow over the death of its President Prof Abul Quasem Fazlul Huq.
In a condolence message, Bangla Academy Director General Prof Mohammad Azam described Prof Huq as a distinguished essayist and national thinker.
“He was particularly known for his impartial political thought and ideas,” he said, adding that Prof Huq had made outstanding contributions to the Bengali language, literature, culture and social thought.
Prof Azam prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed his deepest sympathies to the bereaved family.
Eminent writer, researcher and academic Prof Huq died at around 2:30pm on Sunday at the National Heart Foundation in Mirpur after falling ill at a family program.
He received the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1981.
