Staff Reporter:
The government has allocated Tk226 crore for research purposes for the fiscal year 2026-27, up by 13% from the last fiscal year, the University Grants Commission (UGC) said on Friday, in a bid to refute media reports to the contrary.
Earlier, multiple media outlets reported that the government has not set aside any funds for university-based research works in the national budget for the fiscal year that started on 1 July.
UGC’s public relations wing said the reports were based on “incomplete” information.
Such reports can create confusions among university teachers, researchers and students, it said.
Apart from allocating a higher amount for research compared with the last fiscal year, the government has also made the funding process easier, more transparent and more researcher-friendly.
UGC said it has already sent letters to all public universities, asking them to send their research plans, and funding requirements as soon as possible.
Upon receiving the responses from the universities, the UGC will release the required funds at the earliest, it added.
