President urges journalists to maintain ethics

Staff Reporter:

President Mohammad Shahabuddin yesterday called upon members of the Law Reporters Forum (LRF) to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, ethics, integrity and responsibility in journalism.
“Lawful journalism serves as an important bridge between the judiciary and the people as well,” he told the LRF leaders as its 12-member delegation led by its President Hasan Zaved and General Secretary Moniruzzaman Mission paid a courtesy call on him at Bangabhaban yesterday.
The Head of the State said law reporters play a vital role in disseminating objective, accurate and respon-sible reports on court proceedings and significant verdicts.
He said the journalists, those who work with legal profession, are also making a significant contribution to raising public awareness about legal issues through simple and understandable reporting.
Referring to the supremacy of the Constitution, the rule of law and the establishment of justice as the fundamental pillars of a democratic state, Mohammad Shahabuddin said, “The government is working with the highest priority to ensure the rule of law, justice, human rights and good governance in line with the Constitution.”
The President said various initiatives are being implemented to modernize the judiciary and expand the use of information technology (IT) in the justice system.
Access to justice would become easier and faster if the judiciary, lawyers, journalists and all other stake-holders work together with sincerity and commitment, he mentioned.
The President urged journalists to practice responsible journalism while maintaining the dignity of the courts and respecting the sensitivity of sub judice matters.
He also advised journalists to remain more vigilant and cautious in tackling the challenges posed by mis-information, disinformation and false narratives on social media.
Earlier, the President unveiled the cover of a special commemorative publication brought out on the oc-casion of the LRF’s Silver Jubilee.
President’s Secretary Khan Md Nurul Amin, Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam and Assistant Military Secretary Brigadier General Mohammad Raisul Islam, among others, were present on the occasion.
