Staff Reporter:

A suspected organiser of the Prosit Khisa-backed United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF) sustained bullet injuries during reported gunfight between two rival groups in Khagrachhari’s Guimara upazila on Friday.

Jhimit Chakma, 50, is now undergoing treatment under police custody.

Police said that Jhimit is the Guimara upazila organiser of the UPDF, and has been implicated in six criminal cases on charges including murder and abduction.

Guimara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Sohrawardy said police rescued Jhimit with bullet injuries from the Pinongpara area under Ward No. 9 of Hafchhari Union on Friday morning.

According to police, an exchange of gunfire took place between the UPDF and a rival armed group in the area earlier in the day.

After receiving information, police rushed to the spot but the armed individuals had already fled.

Jhimit was later found lying at the scene with bullet injuries and was taken to Matiranga Upazila Health Complex for treatment.

Police said legal proceedings are underway and the incident is under investigation.
