Specific action to control crime to be taken: Minister

Staff Reporter:

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed yesterday said the government has adopted a specific action plan to control crime in the capital, including Mohammadpur, and criminals will be eliminated through its im-plementation in phases.
He made the remarks this afternoon while responding to a question from journalists at an award ceremo-ny held at the Ministry of Home Affairs in the Secretariat to honor some police members for their com-mendable and praiseworthy work in maintaining law and order.
On the occasion, the Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Inspector General of Police (IGP), DMP Commissioner, senior officials were present.
Referring to the government’s transparency in taking departmental action, the Home Minister said, the matter of the temporary suspension of former Gazipur Commissioner Dr. Nazmul Karim Khan is being processed according to legal and departmental law.
On the other hand, action was taken against the concerned constable, sub-inspector, and OC on the alle-gation of humiliation and physical assault on national cricketer Naeem Hasan in Chattogram.
Regarding the recent tension between Coast Guard personnel and locals in Mongla, the Minister said that the Coast Guard is operating according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to suppress pirates in the Sundarbans and coastal areas. When followers of the identified dacoit Miraj attacked the Coast Guard, they took defensive measures, and the law and order situation there is now completely under con-trol.
On the issue of a nationwide police alert centering around the founding anniversary of a banned political party (whose activities are prohibited under the Anti-Terrorism Act) on June 23, the Minister said, “We have intelligence report that they may attempt to create chaos and instability in the country on that day.
Police are always vigilant to ensure the safety of the people’s life and property, and field-level officers have been put on the high alert to thwart any kind of sabotage attempts.
The Home Minister further said, the process of bringing back former IGP Benazir Ahmed, who was ar-rested in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), to the country is progressing very rapidly.
“Although the UAE Federal Police, based on Interpol’s Red Notice, gave 30 days for the subsequent le-gal process after arresting the accused, the Ministry of Home Affairs prepared and translated all neces-sary documents (144 pages) within just three days and sent them to the UAE government through dip-lomatic channels,” added the Minister.
A total of 15 police members were awarded in recognition of their meritorious contributions to law and order.
The Minister said that the Ministry of Home Affairs has implemented a “Punishment and Reward” poli-cy. Along with rewarding those who demonstrate sincerity and honesty in their duties, departmental ac-tion is being taken swiftly against police members found guilty of negligence or corruption.
