A Dhaka court on Thursday sent actor Zaher Alvi, alias Niamot Ullah Bhuiyan, to jail in a case filed over the alleged abetment of the suicide of his wife, Afra Ibnat Ikra.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin passed the order after the actor surrendered before the court and sought bail.
Confirming the development, state prosecutor Harun Or Rashid said the court rejected the bail petition and ordered that he be sent to jail.
Earlier, at around 11:45am on 28 February, Ikra’s body was found hanging from a ceiling fan at their residence. She was taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.
Ikra’s maternal uncle, Sheikh Tanvir Ahmed, filed the case on the same day, alleging that prolonged family disputes and various forms of abuse had driven his niece to take her own life.
