The Cabinet Division on Thursday issued a gazette notification congratulating Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman on his election as president of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
According to the notification, Khalilur Rahman was elected president of the 81st session of the UNGA in a vote held at the UN headquarters in New York on 2 June.
Out of 190 votes cast, he defeated Cyprus Foreign Minister’s Special Envoy Andreas S Kakouris by a margin of eight votes to secure the prestigious post for a one-year term.
The 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly is scheduled to commence on 8 September.
The election of Khalilur Rahman as president of the 81st session of the UNGA was made possible through the wisdom, foresight and strong leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, as well as the concerted efforts and extensive campaign carried out by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations, read the notification.
“The cabinet believes that the victory reflects the confidence of UN member states in Bangladesh and serves as a clear manifestation of the country’s diplomatic goodwill and international standing.”
The cabinet also extended its heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to Khalilur Rahman on his election, saying the achievement has further enhanced Bangladesh’s image and prestige on the global stage, the notification added.
