Budget to push up prices of several products

Staff Reporter:

Bangladesh will unveil and pass its largest national budget in history on Thursday afternoon, with officials set to approve the 2026–27 fiscal year spending plan in Parliament.

The budget session will take place in the Jatiya Sangsad later in the day, marking a key moment in the country’s economic planning.

Ahead of the announcement, market observers expect price increases on several goods as the government adjusts duties and taxes under the new fiscal framework.

Products likely to become more expensive include filter cigarettes, nicotine pouches, high-end cigarettes, alcohol and spirits, cashew nuts, imported fish, MS rod and related steel products, foreign cosmetics and luxury food items.

Economists say the revised tax structure aims to boost revenue while also discouraging consumption of luxury and harmful products. However, consumers may feel immediate pressure as import-dependent and sin-tax goods rise in cost.

Officials have yet to publish the full breakdown of new duties, but traders have already begun preparing for possible price adjustments across retail markets.
