‘Mobile tower radiation not harmful to human, animal, plants’

Staff Reporter:

There is no evidence that radiation from mobile towers harms the human body or other animals or plants. There is a kind of imaginary fear among some people that mobile towers cause various types of problems like cancer. It is not scientific at all. These are people’s imaginations, said speakers on Satur-day.
There are basically two types of radiation – ionized and nonionized. Ultra-purple rays, gamma rays, X-rays, etc. are ionized that can damage the human body. But mobile phones, mobile towers, routers are all non-ionized. There is nothing harmful about it, they came up with the remarks at a roundtable organized by Telecom and Technology Reporters Network Bangladesh (TRNB) at the BRAC Centre Inn in the cap-ital’s Mohakhali.
Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) Chairman Shyam Sunder Sikder was present as the chief guest and senior officials of the mobile sector and IT providers took part in the dis-cussion.
BTRC Deputy Director Dr Samsuzzoha presented the keynote paper. TRNB President Rashed Mehedi moderated the discussion.
The same type of mobile tower equipment used in Bangladesh is used in all other countries of the world. Moreover, all the operators of Bangladesh follow the international rules that are followed in the installa-tion of mobile towers. The BTRC monitored the radiation levels of these towers across the country from time to time and found that they were below tolerable levels. So there is nothing to fear, said the speak-ers.
Mobile sites are not being set up in at least 300 places in the capital, which are necessary. Awareness needs to be raised to overcome this fear. People want high-quality mobile service; they are not allowing the site to be set up. This is the experience for both public and private organizations. The speakers urged the people to cooperate in the expansion of mobile sites to get high-quality services.
The speakers also said many people are illegally installing jammers, repeaters, boosters on mobile net-works. These cannot be set up. They are illegal. This is also causing damage to the network. Customers are not getting proper service. Operators are being prevented from using waves purchased at a cost of thousands of crores of taka.
