20 killed in Eid day road crashes

Around 20 people, including two children, were killed in road crashes across the country on the first day of Eid-ul-Azha on Thursday.

Among the casualties: three died in Chattogram district, five in Gopalganj, and three in Gaibandha. Two died each in Dinajpur, Faridpur, and Patuakhali and one each in Madaripur, Tangail, and Narail.

Around 11 of the victims were motorbike riders, highlighting the severe risks posed by the vehicle.

Two were killed in the final hours of Wednesday around 10:30pm in Faridpur’s Bhanga upazila. Two motorbikes collided head-on, leaving two men dead.

In Chattogram’s Karnaphuli upazila, at least three people were killed and 30 others injured when an “Eagle Paribahan” bus collided with a leguna around 9pm. The bus was allegedly running in the wrong direction.

Among the injured, 12 were being treated for critical injuries at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

At Gopalganj’s Bedgram bus stand, a motorbike collided with a bus on the Dhaka-Khulna Highway, killing five including three from the same family.

Sohag, 40, was travelling on the bus with his pregnant wife and six-year-old son from Dhaka to his ancestral village in Pirojpur. All three died.

In Gaibandha’s Sundarganj upazila, Maleka Begum, 45, was killed by a speeding motorbike. She was the wife of a rural animal doctor.

In a separate accident past midnight, a local leader of banned Chhatra League, and a rickshaw puller were crushed to death by a passenger bus. The incident happened at Raigram area of the municipality.
