10 universities get new vice chancellors

Staff Reporter:

The government on Thursday appointed new vice chancellors to 10 public universities across the country.

The list includes four general universities: Barishal University, Cumilla University, Islamic University in Kushtia, and Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University in Mymensingh.

There are also six science and technology universities: Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University (MBSTU) in Tangail, Jamalpur Science and Technology University, Pabna Science and Technology University, Noakhali Science and Technology University, and Rangamati Science and Technology University.

BUET Civil Engineering Professor Dr Eqramul Hoque has been appointed as the new vice chancellor of the university, replacing Professor Dr Abu Borhan Mohammad Badruzzaman.

Meanwhile, in an earlier notification a new vice chancellor was appointed for the Begum Rokeya University (BRU) in Rangpur. But within a few hours, the Education Ministry issued another notification, withdrawing the appointment order.

Dhaka University Marketing Department Professor Dr Anisur Rahman’s appointment as BRU’s new VC was cancelled.

Barishal University former treasurer returns as VC

On Thursday, the Education Ministry appointed Professor Mamun-Ur-Rashid of Patuakhali Science and Technology University as the new vice chancellor of Barishal University.

Until May last year, he was the treasurer at the Barishal University. But he was removed from the post over disagreements with then Vice Chancellor Suchita Sharmin. On 13 May 2025, the Education Ministry relieved both from their posts.

Later, Rajshahi University Professor Mohammad Towfiq Alam was appointed as the vice chancellor of Barishal University. However, since Monday, a section of the university’s teachers launched a “complete shutdown” movement, padlocking all the administrative building, on allegations that Towfiq unjustly held up promotions.

On Thursday, he brought in masons and broke down all the locks.

Amid the tensions, the ministry has withdrawn him and appointed former treasurer Mamun-ur-Rashid as the new vice chancellor.

The protesting teachers have said their movement will continue to press home their demands.
