Gazipur: At least 50 workers of a garment factory in the Bhogra area of Gazipur city fell ill yesterday, prompting authorities to declare a holiday at the factory.
Sixteen workers were admitted to different hospitals, including Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical Col-lege Hospital, while others took primary treatment.
Witnesses said authorities of Panasia Clothing Ltd arranged a milad mahfil at the factory in the morning where workers participated.
While a mujanat was underway at the end of the religious program, workers started falling sick one after another, creating panic among fellow workers.
In total, around workers 50 fell ill. They were immediately taken to hospital.
Director of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital Dr Md Aminul Islam said there was no major concern over the condition of the sick workers.
He termed the incident as a case of mass psychogenic illness and said the patients were expected to re-cover gradually after treatment.
Following the incident, the authorities declared the factory closed for the day.
