CHT has strong sports potential

Rangamati: Chattogram Hill Tracts Affairs (CHT) Minister Dipen Dewan yesterday said that the CHT region is a highly promising region for sports.
“Many talented athletes, including Rituparna Chakma and Sur Krishna, have emerged from the hills and brought honour to the country at both national and international levels through various sporting events. The government under the dynamic leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is very committed to the development of sports and culture,” he said.
He said these while addressing the prize-distribution ceremony of the Primary School Gold Cup Boys’ and Girls’ Football Tournament final at Ching Hla Mong Mari Stadium here.
Former Deputy Minister Moni Swapan Dewan, wife of the CHT Minister Maitree Dewan, Additional Superintendent of Police Md. Iqbal Hossain, Freedom Fighter Colonel (retd) Manish Dewan, District Jamaat Ameer Professor Abdul Alim, District Primary Education Officer Md. Kafil Uddin, Member Secretary of the District Sports Association and former Mayor Saiful Islam Chowdhury Bhutto, among others, were present at the event with Rangamati Deputy Commissioner and District Sports Association President Nazma Ashrafi in the chair.
He said the CHT Ministry will work to develop new talented athletes in line with government directives as sports and cultural activities are essential for maintaining communal harmony in the hill region.
He urged school teachers to focus not only on education but also on developing future athletes.
He also said that the government plans to take new initiatives through the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs to promote sports and culture among children in every school across the hill districts.
In the tournament finals, the girls’ team from Pakujjachhari Residential Government Primary School of Baghaichhari became champions after defeating Jagannathchhara Government Primary School of Barkal 3–0. In the boys’ category, Rajnagar Government Primary School of Longadu won the title by beating Taitong Para Government Primary School of Rajasthali 5–1.
