Man sent to jail over misleading social media posts targeting chief whip

Staff Reporter:
A Dhaka court on Saturday sent an accused to jail in a case filed over spreading false and misleading social media posts to ‘blackmail’ Jatiya Sangsad Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Piash passed the order after the Detective Branch (DB) produced the accused, AM Hasan Nasim, 35, seeking a seven-day remand. The defence, however, filed petitions seeking bail and cancellation of remand.
Confirming the matter, defence lawyer Zahirul Islam said the court rejected both the remand and bail petitions and sent the accused to jail and fixed today for the bail petition hearing.
According to the case statement, the complainant, Md Nazrul Islam, filed the case with Gulshan police station after noticing around 11:30pm on 11 April, while at a Gulshan-2 residence, that a Facebook account had posted objectionable and misleading content targeting the Chief Whip.
The accused also sent screenshots of the posts to the chief whip via WhatsApp in an attempt to blackmail, the case statement added.
Following the complaint, a DB team conducted a drive using information technology, arrested the accused from the Sher-e-Bangla Nagar area at around 8pm Friday, and seized relevant evidence linked to the case from his possession.
