Staff Reporter:
A college student died after allegedly being beaten and thrown into a lift shaft from the eighth floor by a teenage gang in the city.
The victim, Ashfaq Kabir Sajid, 17, son of Abul Hashem Sikder of the city’s Bakolia area, was a class XI student of BAF Shaheen College.
Although the incident took place on Sunday, the details emerged on Thursday.
Police have so far arrested four of the seven accused in the case filed earlier by the victim’s father with Chawk Bazar Police Station.
The arrestees are alleged gang leader Enayet Ullah, 47, Aimon, 24, Mishkatul Kayes, 19, and security guard Enamul Haque, 55.
Sources said Sajid’s friend Fardin Hasan called him to the Mousumi Residential Area intersection over the phone on the day of the incident.
While they were talking, a group of youths, including Aimon, Anik, Rana Michael, Ilyas, Enayet Ullah and Mishkatul Kayes, allegedly threatened Sajid and forcibly took him away.
At one stage, in an attempt to escape, Sajid entered a nearby under-construction building and ran up to the eighth floor.
The attackers followed him and assaulted him mercilessly there. He was later thrown into the empty lift shaft from the eighth floor, sources said.
Locals spotted Sajid lying in the shaft and called the national emergency number 999. Police rescued him from the spot and took him to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Babul Azad of Chawk Bazar Police Station said, “The murder appears to have stemmed from a previous conflict between two groups of teenagers.”
“We are trying to determine the exact cause of the dispute and identify others involved,” he added.
