At least five people, including four from the same family, were killed when a passenger bus crushed their car in Cumilla’s Burichang upazila on Tuesday evening.
Another family member was critically injured in the crash, said Mainamati Crossing Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Momin.
The incident took place near the Miami Roadside Hotel on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Kalakachua area of the upazila around 7pm.
The deceased have been identified as: Mufti Mawlana Abdul Mumin, 50, his wife Jharna Begum, 40, their son Saif, 7, and daughter Labiba, 18. The couple’s second children Abrar, 12, was admitted to the Cumilla Medical College Hospital in serious conditions.
The fifth deceased was the car driver Jamal Hossain, 52.
The family members hail from Chhatarpaiya village, Sonaimuri upazila in Noakhali. The car driver hails from Barishal.
According to police, a bus of Starline company hit the car from the right. The car driver died on the spot, while the rest succumbed to injuries following admission to multiple local hospitals.
The bus, car and corpses were later brought to the police station. Tensions spread in the area following the accident, but police responded promptly to bring the situation under control, officers told reporters.
Notably, Jharna Begum is the younger sister of Maulana Faysal Ahmed, organisational secretary at the Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, making all the family members his relatives.
