A young woman died tragically after being thrown from a moving rickshaw during a snatching incident in the Turag area of the capital.
The deceased was identified as Mukta Akter, 21.
The incident took place around 9:00am on Thursday near a metro rail station in Turag. She was taken to several hospitals in critical condition before being brought to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead at around 1:45pm.
Mukta was the wife of Limon Hossain from Farhadpur village in Godagari upazila of Rajshahi district. Their ancestral home is in Barguna. Her father’s name is Abdul Jalil. The couple had been living in a rented house in the Fayadabad area of Uttara.
Confirming the matter, Inspector Md Faruk, in-charge of DMCH police outpost, said the body has been kept at the hospital morgue for an autopsy.
According to the victim’s husband, Limon, the couple had gone to a tailor shop in the morning and returned home after dropping off some clothes. Later, Mukta left for Uttara House Building Market to do some shopping.
Limon said he received news about half an hour later that his wife had been injured and was being taken to a hospital. At the hospital, he learned from the auto-rickshaw driver who rescued her that Mukta had been travelling in his battery-powered auto-rickshaw toward House Building.
When the vehicle reached an area between the Uttara Center and Uttara South metro stations, snatchers in a private car allegedly pulled her handbag. As a result, she fell from the moving rickshaw and sustained critical injuries. She later died in hospital.
Her husband said they had planned to celebrate Eid at her father’s home in Barguna and that she had been very happy about the trip. She was on her way to buy necessary items for the journey when the incident occurred.
