Staff Reporter:
The capital experienced the season’s first rainfall accompanied by hail on Friday evening, even as the winter chill has yet to fully subside.
Light rain began in different parts of Dhaka after 7:00pm. Reports of hailstorms were received from areas including Jatrabari, Badda, Link Road, Gulshan and Vatara.
Earlier in the day, the Bangladesh Weather Observation Team (BWOT) had forecast rainfall. According to the forecast, the country’s first pre-monsoon rain belt of the year, named Godhuli, was expected to become active from Friday night, entering through the northeastern region.
The agency said the rain belt could bring Nor’wester (Kalbaishakhi) storms and thunderstorms with rainfall to around 40–50% of the country. The partial rain belt is expected to have a greater impact on the northeastern districts.
Prolonged rainfall is particularly likely in the Sylhet Division and Mymensingh Division, according to the forecast.
The weather system is expected to enter the country through the Sylhet, Rangpur Division and Mymensingh divisions on Friday night and may exit through the coastal regions by 18 March.
