Staff Reporter:

One person was killed in post-election violence in Char Abdullah village under Adhara union in Munshiganj Sadar Upazila on Friday following clashes between two rival groups.

The deceased was identified as Jasim Nayeb, 35.

His brother-in-law, Md Didar, confirmed that he died on the way to Dhaka after being referred from Munshiganj General Hospital to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Locals said tensions had been mounting ahead of the election between supporters of rival candidates. After the results were announced, an altercation between supporters of the BNP and an independent candidate reportedly escalated into violence. In the afternoon, a group allegedly attacked the house of Mafik Nayeb, during which Jasim was seriously injured.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Md Firoz Kabir said police had received reports of a person’s death.

As of 9:00pm, sporadic clashes were reportedly continuing, with several others injured, he said.
