A total of 4,538 inmates have cast their votes through postal ballots in different jails across the country over the last five days till Saturday as part of the ongoing voting process on the eve of the 13th nationalparliamentary election that is scheduled to be held on 12 February, prisons officials said.
According to official data, 1,521 inmates voted on 3 February, followed by 988 on 4 February. On 5 February, the number stood at 1,138, while 420 inmates cast their votes on 6 February.
On Saturday (7 February), a total of 471 inmates participated in the postal ballot voting. Among them, 448 were male and 23 were female inmates. Of the total voters on the day, 16 were classified as special inmates.
UNB has learned some of the prisoners to have cast their ballots include ex-AL MP and state minister, Dr Enamur Rahman, another ex-AL MP Abdul Aziz, and journalist Mozammel Babu, who were all imprisoned in the wake of the July Uprising of 2024.
Authorities said the list of inmates who did not participate in voting has not yet been received.
The postal ballot voting process in jails is scheduled to continue on Sunday as well, said Assistant Inspector General of Prisons (Media and Development) Md Jannat Ul Farhad said on Saturday evening.
