The government has decided to rename the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) as the Special Intervention Force (SIF).
The government has also decided to redesign the force’s uniform.
A gazette notification will be issued soon in this regard.
Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Tuesday disclosed the information to journalists after a meeting of the Core Committee on Law and Order at the Secretariat.
Stating that the renaming of RAB has been done in response to public demand, he said the name had developed a negative perception among the public and people wanted it to be changed.
There have been many changes in RAB’s activities since 5 August, and the change in name would also be accompanied by changes in the force’s operations, he added.
Expressing hope that there would be no mob violence during the election, he said the Ministry of Home Affairs is making every effort to ensure this.
He added that the upcoming election would be fair, festive, neutral, and acceptable.
