Traffic chaos grips Dhaka as 7-college students block roads

Staff Reporter:

Capital Dhaka yesterday again witnessed severe traffic congestion as students of seven government col-leges blocked key roads including the Science Lab intersection, demanding the promulgation of an ordi-nance to establish Dhaka Central University.
The protesters brought out a procession from Dhaka College and blocked Science Lab road around 12:45pm.
Besides, students put up blockades at Tantibazar intersection around 11:45am and at the Technical inter-section around 12:30pm, said witnesses.
Vehicular movement in these areas came to a standstill due to the demonstrations, causing massive tail-backs and serious inconvenience to commuters.
Sources said protesters also took positions in Farmgate area, extending traffic congestion up to the Ele-vated Expressway.
They warned that the student movement would continue if the demand is not met within the stipulated time.
Earlier on Tuesday, the protesters announced the program, pressing a single-point demand — approval of the updated draft of the Dhaka Central University Ordinance at the Advisory Council meeting sched-uled for January 15.
