Staff Reporter:
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has recovered 24 powerful electric detonators during an operation in Tahirpur upazila of Sunamganj, along the Bangladesh–India border.
According to BGB sources, a special patrol team from Charagaon Border Outpost (BOP) conducted the operation in the Maijhati border area on Friday morning, acting on secret information.
The detonators were found wrapped in polythene and hidden under tree branches, the sources said.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the recovered detonators could be used to make high-powered Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). It is suspected that the explosives were being smuggled across the border for use in sabotage activities aimed at destabilising the country’s stable environment.
Lt Col AKM Zakaria Qadir, commanding officer of BGB Sunamganj Battalion-28, said that the seizure was made possible due to strengthened intelligence surveillance, regular patrols, and heightened vigilance in the border areas.
He added that BGB operations would continue in the future to prevent all forms of smuggling, including drugs, arms, and explosives.
Legal proceedings regarding the recovered explosive materials are currently underway, BGB officials said.
