Govt calls for vigilance against ‘isolated extremist groups’

Staff Reporter:

The interim government has urged everyone to remain resolutely vigilant against all forms of violence carried out by a “handful of isolated extremist groups.”

The government strongly and unequivocally condemns all acts of violence, intimidation, arson, and destruction of life and property, it said in a statement on Friday, after protests against July warrior Osman Hadi’s death allegedly contributed to overnight attacks on different institutions.

Authorities called on every citizen to show due respect to martyred Hadi by rejecting and resisting violence, provocation, and hatred.

“At this critical juncture in the nation’s history, we are moving through a historic democratic transition. We cannot—and will not—allow this progress to be derailed by a small number of individuals who thrive on disorder and reject the path of peace,” the statement continued.

“The upcoming election and referendum are not merely political exercises; they are a solemn national commitment. This commitment is inseparably linked to the dream for which Shaheed Sharif Osman Hadi sacrificed his life. Honouring his sacrifice and memory requires an unwavering commitment to restraint, responsibility, and the rejection of hatred.

“To the journalists of The Daily Star, Prothom Alo, and New Age, we say: we stand with you. We are deeply saddened by the terror and violence you have faced. The nation has witnessed your courage and resilience even in the face of intimidation. An attack on journalists is an attack on the truth itself. We assure you of full justice.

“We strongly condemn the incident in Mymensingh in which a Hindu man was beaten to death. There is no place for such violence in the new Bangladesh. No one involved in this brutal crime will be spared.”
