Protests erupted in Dhaka and other parts of the country on Thursday night following the death of Inqilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.
Demonstrators took to the streets soon after the news of Hadi’s death spread around.
They blocked the capital’s Shahbagh intersection around 10:30pm, chanting slogans such as “Tumi Ke, Ami Ke, Hadi, Hadi” and “Amra Shobai Ek Hobo, Gulir Mukhe Kotha Kobo.”
One of the leaders of the July Uprising and a prospective independent candidate for the upcoming national election from Dhaka-8, Hadi was shot and critically injured on Box Culvert Road in the capital’s Paltan area on 12 December.
He sustained bullet injuries to the head and was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he underwent surgery, before being transferred to Evercare Hospital later that night.
He was admitted to Singapore General Hospital on Monday after being flown to Singapore by air ambulance for treatment. He passed away on Thursday night while undergoing treatment there.
