He added that Inspector (Operations) Yasin Mia has been assigned to investigate the case.
According to police, the incident took place on Friday afternoon, a day after the announcement of the schedule for the 13th National Parliament election.
Two assailants shot Sharif Osman Hadi from a moving motorcycle on Box Culvert Road in the city’s Paltan area before fleeing the scene. He sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
Police said two individuals involved in the shooting have been identified as Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Hossain.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has detained three people including prime suspect Faisal Karim Masud’s wife Samia in connection with the shooting of Osman Hadi.
The other detainees are Faisal Karim Masud’s friend Monika and his brother-in-law Shipu.
They were detained during separate raids conducted in Dhaka and Narayanganj over the last 24 hours, Wing Commander MZM Enthekhab Chowdhury, director of RAB’s legal and media wing, confirmed.
According to RAB, Faisal maintained contact with all three individuals both before and after the shoot-ing.
Enthekhab Chowdhury said Faisal spent the night before the incident with his wife in Narayanganj and left for Dhaka at dawn. He later went to the residence of his friend Monika.
RAB also seized the motorcycle used in the shooting and detained its owner, Abdul Hannan, from Mo-hammadpur area in the capital. He was later placed on a three-day remand on Sunday.
