Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan, who recently resigned from the interim government as an adviser, has announced that he will contest the upcoming national election as an independent candidate from Dhaka-10.
He made the declaration on Friday through a post on his verified Facebook page.
In a video message accompanying the announcement, Asif said the forthcoming election presents the nation with its first real opportunity in 17 years to shape Bangladesh’s future.
“Building a new Bangladesh is difficult but not impossible. We must move beyond the politics of division that has persisted for generations and work toward establishing a welfare-oriented state for every citizen,” he said. “Implementing a new social, political, and geopolitical framework is essential.”
He added that the path ahead would be challenging, but he was inspired by the sacrifices of Motiur Rahman, Taramon Bibi, Noor Hossain, Felani, Abrar Fahad, Abu Sayed and “countless others” who fought for justice and a better Bangladesh.
Asif confirmed that he will run independently in Dhaka-10, which comprises Dhanmondi, Kalabagan, Hazaribagh, New Market and part of Kamrangirchar.
The former adviser acknowledged that he does not have the backing of a major political party, a vast group of activists or the financial strength typically required for a campaign.
“My only strength is your support. My accountability will be solely to the people,” he said. “I am not just a parliamentary candidate — I am also a candidate for the referendum. Vote ‘yes’ in the referendum to seize this opportunity for national reform achieved at the cost of so many lives.”
