Govt withdraws VAT on metro rail tickets

Staff Reporter:

The interim government has withdrawn VAT, which has been deferred repeatedly, on Dhaka metro rail tickets permanently, as the rail services have significantly improved people’s travel experience over the years, said the Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam on Thursday.

The previous government had allowed VAT exemption for metro rail services, which would expire by the end of the year after repeated extensions.

On Thursday, a meeting of the advisory council, chaired by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, decided the 15% VAT must be lifted for public convenience, Shafiqul Alam said at a press briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital.

The VAT withdrawal would incur around Tk40 crore loss for the government, he added.
