Khaleda Zia’s travel abroad depends on her health condition: Zahid

Staff Reporter:

Former prime minister and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s travel abroad for treatment depends entirely on her physical condition, which remains the top priority, her personal physician Dr AZM Zahid Hossain said on Saturday.

“The Qatari air ambulance could not arrive here due to a technical issue. However, members of the medical board also decided in an emergency meeting at that time that it would not be appropriate for her to travel then,” Zahid told the media this afternoon.

He said the air ambulance is now ready and that ensuring Khaleda Zia’s treatment-related safety is currently the top priority.

Both local and foreign physicians overseeing her treatment are also placing the highest importance on her physical condition.

Zahid, also a BNP Standing Committee member, urged people not to pay any attention to rumours about Khaleda’s health condition.

The three-time former prime minister recovered from even worse health conditions in the past, he said, expressing hope that she will fully recover this time as well.

Khaleda, 80, was admitted to Evercare Hospital on 23 November following the advice of her medical board after being diagnosed with infections in her heart and lungs.

She has since also developed pneumonia and is currently being treated in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) under the close supervision of a combined team of local and foreign specialists.

The BNP chief has been suffering from a range of chronic health complications, including cardiovascular disease, liver and kidney disorders, diabetes, lung ailments, arthritis and various ophthalmic conditions. She has a permanent pacemaker and previously underwent stenting due to cardiac complications.
