Former state minister for home affairs Tanjim Ahmad Sohel Taj, son of Bangladesh’s first prime minister Tajuddin Ahmad, on Saturday shared on his verified Facebook page the letter through which India formally recognised Bangladesh in 1971.

In his post, Sohel Taj said that on 6 December 1971, India officially recognised Bangladesh as an independent state.

“On 6 December 1971, India formally recognised Bangladesh. Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi conveyed the decision to Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Tajuddin Ahmad through an official letter. Just days later, on 16 December, Bangladesh secured its victory,” he wrote.
