Two more earthquakes jolt Dhaka this evening

Staff Reporter:

Yet two more tremors shook Dhaka on Saturday evening, intensifying panic among already truamatised residents.

“The first quake measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale struck the city’s Badda area at 6:06:04pm,” Farzana Sultana, assistant meteorologist of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), told the Daily Sun.

Categorised as “minor”, the quake’s epicentre was 6km east of the BMD Seismic Centre in Agargaon, Dhaka, she said.

The second earthquake of 4.3 magnitude was felt at 6:06:05pm, the BMD official said.
Classified as “light”, the epicenter of the tremor was in Narsingdi, 23km northeast of the BMD Seismic Centre, she added.

Meanwhile, the US Geological Survey said the quake hit at a depth of 10km and its epicenter was 11km west of Narsingdi.

Earlier in the day, a 3.3 magnitude tremor was recorded in Palash upazila of Narsingdi at 10:36am, according to the BMD.

On Friday, at least 10 people, including two children, were killed and hundreds injured after a moderate earthquake struck Dhaka and several other districts.

Dozens of buildings developed cracks or tilted due to the 5.7 magnitude tremor that struck at 10:38am in Narsingdi at a depth of 10km.
