Mobile phone traders have announced that all mobile phone sales outlets across the country will remain closed from yesterday (Wednesday) in protest against the detention of Sumash Tech CEO Abu Sayeed Piyas allegedly by the Detective Branch (DB) of police.
Mobile Business Community Bangladesh (MBCB) leaders made the announcement at a press con-ference held at the Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) yesterday afternoon.
Speakers at the press briefing said the association’s secretary Piyas must be released by Wednesday; otherwise they will launch a ‘strict countrywide movement.’
Quoting family members they alleged that DB personnel picked up Piyas, a smartphone and gadget trader, from his Mirpur-1 residence late Tuesday night.
Piyas’s wife Sumaiya Chowdhury claimed that around 3am, officers identifying themselves as DB members entered their home and picked up her husband.
She also said the team seized his mobile phone during the drive.
No official comment has been made by police regarding the detention.
