Bangladesh’s role in COP should be broadened

Staff Reporter:

Fisheries and Livestock Affairs Adviser Farida Akhter yesterday said Bangladesh’s representation at the UN Conference of the Parties (COP) should not be limited only to the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change but expanded to include officials from other concerned ministries.
“Bangladesh representation in COP should be broadened with the participation from ministries of wom-en and children affairs, agriculture, fisheries and livestock, and disaster management and other con-cerned,” she said.
The adviser was addressing a workshop titled “Participation of Stakeholders in COP-30” as the chief guest at CIRDAP auditorium in the capital.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock organised the workshop.
The adviser said that discussions on climate change often remain confined to environmental impacts on-ly, while the fisheries and livestock sectors are also suffering serious consequences due to climate change.
“About 80 percent of global carbon emissions come from rich nations, yet the worst victims are mostly the least developed and developing countries,” she added.
Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Abu Tahir Muhammad Zaber chaired the workshop while Additional Secretary Md Imam Uddin Kabir delivered the welcome address.
Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Mohammad Navid Shafiullah presented the concept note on “World Climate Conference (COP-30)”.
Professors, researchers, representatives of government and non-government organisations, and climate activists attended the workshop.
