Law Adviser Asif Nazrul on Wednesday turned down the chance of lifting the ban Awami League’s political activities after the February general elections, saying the restrictions would remain in place in the near future.
In a recent interview, Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus said the restrictions could be lifted “anytime,” and that Awami League cannot contest in the upcoming polls “for the time being.” The remarks led to speculations that the curbs could be lifted soon or even before next year’s elections.
Adviser Asif Nazrul downplayed the chief adviser’s statements only as “theoretical arguments.”
The law adviser was replying to queries from journalists in this regard, after visiting a Puja Mandap at Sree Sree Sankar Math in Barishal city.
The adviser said when a political party’s activities are banned there is only a question of whether it is permanent or temporary.
The adviser said that the national elections will be held in the first half of February 2026.
Regarding the unrest in the Chattogram Hill Tracts, he said the government will take action against those responsible.
During the visit, the adviser met and exchanged greetings with leaders of the Hindu community.
Barishal Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Delwar Hussain, Superintendent of Police Md Sharif Uddin, Sree Sree Sankar Math, Barishal Committee President Kanu Lal Saha and former General Secretary Tammay Topu, among others, were present.
