BNP upbeat after Yunus meet, but no formal election date yet: Analyst cautions

Staff Reporter:

The apparent optimism within BNP following its Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s meeting with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus in London may be premature, according to political commentator and activist Babar Honey.

He cautioned that no formal commitment has yet been made regarding the election timeline.

In a Facebook post on Friday evening, Babar Honey wrote: “The aftermath of the meeting is exactly what BNP had been hoping for. Tarique Rahman and other senior leaders seem visibly upbeat, a clear sign they think they got what they came for.”

Referring to the interim government’s post-meeting press communication, Babar observed that it strongly implies the next general election could be brought forward from April to February 2026—a core demand of the BNP leadership. He noted that Chief Adviser Yunus seems to have “backed off” from extending his tenure, which was previously projected to last until April.

However, the analyst stressed that these developments remain speculative.

“Understand what the BNP and their leadership aren’t understanding—it’s all just implication. Nothing has been promised, and nothing has been formally announced.”

Labelling this strategy as “Textbook Yunus 101,” Babar argued that the Chief Adviser is known for deliberately ambiguous communication, keeping stakeholders calm without making binding commitments.

“Smile, nod, and say ‘Goodbye.’”

He further expressed deep mistrust in Yunus’s leadership of the transitional government.

“I don’t trust CA Yunus at all. Until he steps down and hands over power to an elected government, his words cannot be trusted. His continued presence as the Head of State remains a threat to Bangladesh’s sovereignty.”

Babar concluded by urging the BNP to push hard for a confirmed election date, rather than celebrate what could be a political mirage.

This perspective comes amid growing scrutiny of the interim government’s reform agenda and timeline for restoring electoral democracy. While BNP has welcomed the tone of Friday’s meeting, no official election date has yet been declared, and the Chief Adviser’s roadmap remains conditional on what he calls “sufficient progress” in institutional reforms and justice proceedings.
