The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) recorded the country’s highest temperature at 37 degrees Celsius in the Rajshahi division on Wednesday, as over 49 districts reeled under a mild to moderate heatwave.
Residents of Nilphamari in the Rangpur division experienced a moderate heatwave, while the remaining districts witnessed mild conditions.
A mild heatwave also swept across the Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna and Sylhet divisions, as well as the districts of Brahmanbaria and Feni.
BMD meteorologist Omar Faruq said the current temperature is likely to persist for another two to three days.
He noted that the heatwave feels more uncomfortable due to high humidity, and the light rainfall forecast failed to bring much relief.
However, Omar Faruq added that the discomfort is expected to ease from 15–16 June, when heavier rainfall is predicted.
Meanwhile, residents of Dhaka — where the temperature reached 35.6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday — largely opted to stay indoors during the daytime.
Public health experts have advised people to avoid direct sunlight and use proper protection such as sunglasses, umbrellas and caps when going out in the heat.
