Chhatra Dal expels member after violent attempt to free ex-BCL leader

Staff Reporter:

The Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) permanently expelled Zayedul Islam Babu on Wednesday, a day after Babu allegedly shot and killed a man in attempts to free a member of banned Chhatra League (BCL).

In a press statement, signed by JCD Office Secretary Md Jahangir Alam, BNP’s student wing said it permanently revoked Babu’s “primary membership” in the organisation on the basis of finding “specific allegations of breaching organisational discipline.”

The move has been approved by JCD President Rakibul Islam Rakib and General Secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir, the statement said.

As per the statement, JCD has asked all its members to severe all organisational ties with Babu, and requested the law enforcers to take appropriate legal measures against him.

On Tuesday afternoon, locals detained Sabbir Hossain, a grassroots leader of banned BCL, at Mazhipara area, Bhulta union, Rupganj upazila, Narayanganj. At the orders from Badal Bhuiyan, Jubodal’s organisational secretary at Bhulta union, the villagers started pulling Sabbir towards Badal’s residence.

At mid-point, Babu and his comrades intercepted the locals and tried to free Sabbir, who lately joined Babu’s team. A fighting ensued between the two groups, and at one point, Babu fired five rounds of bullets.

Badal’s brother Mamun, also involved with Jubo Dal’s politics, suffered gunshots and died hours later while undergoing treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Even before Mamun succumbed to his injuries, Badal had filed a lawsuit accusing 16 people and naming Babu as the prime accused.

Badal alleged Babu’s paternal uncle is the convener of district Swachhesebak Dal, BNP’s wing of “volunteers.” Babu is himself a JCD leader. Since the 5 August ouster of Awami League government, Babu has been ruling the extortion and drugs business in the area by exploiting his political influence.

Babu roped in local activists of banned Jubo League and Chhatra League for his team and took control of their illegal firearms to expand his territorial influence, Badal alleged.
