Journalists Shakil Ahmed and Farzana Rupa were released on a four-hour parole from the Kashimpur Central Jail Complex in Gazipur on Wednesday after the death of the letter’s mother.
The journalist couple was released around 6:30 pm, said Anand Kumar Shil, deputy jail superintendent of the Kashimpur High-Security Prison.
Farzana Rupa was being held at the Kashimpur Women’s Prison, while Shakil Ahmed was in the high-security unit of the prison.
The prison authorities said the temporary release was granted following the death of Rupa’s mother.
Her family applied to the Dhaka District Magistrate, requesting parole on humanitarian grounds.
The couple was granted permission to leave custody for four hours, Anamul said.
Police arrested them on 21 August at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka, while they were attempting to flee the country.
Later, they were arrested in a murder case of Fazlul Karim in Uttara during an anti-discrimination student protest and both were sent to jail following their arrest.
