Staff Reporter:
Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul yesterday said that the government is working to reform the law in such a way so that fascism cannot raise head again.
He said this while presiding over a view-exchange meeting on ‘The Code of Criminal Procedure (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025′, held at the auditorium of the Judicial Administration Training Institute in the capital.
Asif Nazrul said, “We want to make such a change in the law and judicial system that if a doctorial ruler wants to emerge in the future, or if rulers want to violate the rule of law or act arbitrarily, it will not be possible.”
“We expect to do this, we want to make the law as difficult as possible for them (dictators),” he said.
He said, “To make a law, there has to be a lot of discussion. There are many reviews in parliament, and drafts are made repeatedly. Yet, we are doing these things quickly because political parties are generally not interested in making laws that serve public welfare.”
The adviser said, “We are trying to do a lot of things. We are working. Yet, it seems that many people are saying, where is the reform?’ And they are saying, ‘why so fast?’ Those who criticize need a little re-form in their mentality. Amnesty International has praised the amendment to the Cyber Security Act enacted a few days ago. We have worked very deeply for this. Our reform work will continue.”
Noting that there is now unfettered freedom to criticize the government compared to previous times, he said, “We also consider this to be a major reform for us.”
Stating that the government is working seriously to reduce the backlog of cases, he said, “We are consid-ering bringing a major change in the Legal Services Act. In this case, in cases of petty offenses, com-promise cases, family cases, and NI Act cases, you must go to Legal Aid, otherwise, you cannot come to court before that.”
Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman, IGP Baharul Alam, Dhaka University Professor Dr. Mohammad Mahbubur Rahman, Supreme Court Bar Association President Barrister AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal Md. Tajul Islam, Senior Lawyer Barrister Ruhul Quddus Kajal, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Supreme Court Bar Association Mahfuzur Rahman Milon, Executive Director and Senior Lawyer of BLAST Barrister Sara Hossain, Senior Lawyer Shishir Monir, Public Prosecutors Md.
