ICT receives formal charge over 6 killings in city

The prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) yesterday filed the formal charge in a crime against humanity case lodged over the killings of six innocent people in the city’s Chankharpool area on August 5, 2024.
It is the first formal charge filed at the ICT in connection with the July Mass Uprising cases. Confirming the matter to newsmen, prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim said Chief Prosecutor Muhammad Tajul Islam filed the formal charge at the ICT Registrar’s office this noon.
The prosecution pressed charges against eight, including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Habibur Rahman. The other accused are- then DMP Joint Commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty, former Additional Deputy Commissioner Shah Alam Mohammad Akhtarul Islam, former Assistant Commissioner of Ramna Zone of DMP Mohammad Imrul, former Police Inspector (Operation) Arshad Hossain, and constables Sujon, Imaz Hossain, and Nasirul Islam.
Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Mahdi Hasan Zunayed, Md Yakub, Md Rakib Hawlader, Md Ismamul Haque and Manik Miah were martyred in the Chankharpul area on August 5, 2024.
The investigation agency of the tribunal filed the 90-page probe report on April 20.
“The investigation agency prepared the probe report in six months and 13 days. Testimonies of 79 wit-nesses have been recorded, 19 video footages, 11 newspaper reports, two audio files, 11 books or reports and six death certificates were attached with the report,” Muhammad Tajul Islam said earlier.
On April 22, the ICT-1 set today for submitting probe report in the case as the prosecution pleaded for four weeks time.
