The Chief Adviser’s Office has given a verbal approval for a meeting between Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman and the interim government head at the State Guesthouse Jamuna in the capital at 6pm on Saturday.
The Jamaat chief applied for the meeting with Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus to discuss the country’s rapidly deteriorating political scenario, said the party’s Nayeb-e-Amir Syed Abdullah Muhammad Taher.
On Friday morning, news broke out that the chief adviser is considering to resign from his post amid a growing political pressure on him to fulfill “certain interests.”
In an emergency meeting, Prof Yunus told NCP Convener Nahid Islam that he cannot perform properly under such pressure, the NCP leader told reporters on Friday.
Along with a number of other political parties, Jamaat-e-Islami has already clarified they do not want to see Prof Yunus resigning abruptly. Rather, they want Prof Yunus to oversee the next general elections as the government head.
Earlier, in the day, Jamaat had urged Prof Yunus to convene an all-party dialogue to address the ongoing political crisis.
The crisis erupted in the form of days of street blockades enforced by BNP activists across major parts of the capital, demanding BNP leader Ishraque Hossain be appointed as the mayor of Dhaka South. Even when a High Court (HC) writ challenging the appointment was pending, BNP activists kept demonstrating, paralyzing parts of the capital.
At one point, Ishraque and his supporters started demanding the resignation two de facto ministers in the government for ensuring its credibility. On Thursday, they paused their protests for two days to review the government actions hours after the HC ruled in favour of Ishraque, clearing his path to mayorship.
