National Security Adviser Dr. Khalilur Rahman yesterday categorically said that he holds only Bangla-deshi citizenship and dismissed any speculation regarding foreign nationality.
“I hold only one nationality, and that is Bangladeshi citizenship,” Dr. Rahman said at a media briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital yesterday.
Clarifying his previous overseas residence, he stated, “Before arriving here, I lived in the USA with my family. But, it doesn’t mean that I am a foreign citizen.”
Addressing recent questions raised about his nationality, Dr. Rahman said that assumptions based on his time abroad are misleading.
“Please don’t label me with something that I really do not deserve. If you can, prove it in court,” he said.
Dr. Rahman also underscored his rights as a citizen and expressed concern over attempts to discredit him.
“I hold some rights as a citizen of this country and it would be very unfortunate if they do not respect the rights that I hold,” he added.
Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam and Deputy Press Secretary Apurba Jahangir were pre-sent at the briefing.
