The government is seriously considering the demand to ban Awami League, the oldest political party that played a leading role in achieving the independence of Bangladesh, for its all-out indulgence in authoritarian and terrorist activities.
In a statement released for the media on Friday afternoon, the Press Wing of the chief adviser said that the government has already communicated with all political parties to reach a decision immediately.
The government is considering banning Awami League as the demand has already grown louder among the political parties, various organisations and the people, it said.
In this context, the government is taking the United Nations report on the terrorist activities of the leaders and activists of Awami League under consideration, read the statement.
The government has already banned Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student wing of Awami League, branding it as a terrorist organisation, showing respect to the people’s demand, it said and called upon all to remain patient until a decision comes.
To take appropriate measures against the organisation involved in the crimes against humanity, the government has already taken initiatives to bring necessary amendments to the relevant act, it said.
Besides, a huge number of people from different classes and professions staged a demonstration near the chief adviser’s residence, Jamuna, in the capital shortly after Jummah prayers on Friday, demanding a ban on the Awami League.
The rally was formally inaugurated with a recitation from the Qur’an at 2:40 pm in front of the InterContinental Hotel near the Jamuna in Dhaka.
The students from different educational institutions and people from all walks of life started joining the demonstration by holding small processions at noon.
Apart from them, leaders and activists of several political parties, including Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and other religious-based organisations, were seen participating in the rally carrying placards, festoons and banners to meet their demand.
