BNP Standing Committee Member Abdul Moyeen Khan has said that the issue of banning Awami League does not depend on his party’s decision.
“It depends on the will of the government, the election commission and the consensus among those demanding the ban,” he said, responding to a query after emerging from a meeting held at BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s Gulshan office in Dhaka on Friday.
Responding to another query, he said the countrymen will decide who will be allowed to join the next general election.
Moyeen Khan, one of the top policy makers of BNP, avoided the question strategically, when the demand for banning Awami League is getting louder among people from different political parties, organisations and classes and professions.
BNP has become desperate for the national election and believes that the demand is a part of a strategy to prolong the national election.
The party supports holding the Awami League leaders accountable for their misdeeds and corruption, but it opposes any attempt to impose a ban on the party.
About the prevailing political crisis, Moyeen Khan said the sooner the election is held, the better it will be for Bangladesh.
“We want to return to the path of democracy, and only a fair election can help us in this regard,” he said.
Pointing his finger at the Awami League men, he said, “We have to ask them, will they come to the election at all? Has any member of the party apologised for holding the people hostage in the last 15 years?”
