Barrister Abdur Razzaq, former assistant secretary general of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami passed away at a Dhaka hospital yesterday afternoon. He was 74.
Razzaq, also a senior lawyer of the Supreme Court, breathed his last at a hospital around 4:10 pm at Ibne Sina Hospital in the capital, Advocate Sishir Monir said in his verified facebook post.
He had been undergoing treatment at the hospital since April 21 due to illness.
Razzaq was survived by his two sons, two daughters and a host of relatives to mourn his death.
He returned to Bangladesh from the United Kingdom on December 26, 2024, after 11 years. He has since resumed his legal practice at the Supreme Court as a senior advocate.
Barrister Razzaq had left the country on December 18, 2013, and he stayed in the UK.
Prior to that, he had served as a lead defense lawyer for top leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami in war crimes cases at the International Crimes Tribunal.
He was born in the village of Shekhlal in Mathiura union of Beanibazar Upazila of Sylhet district in 1944.
After completing his BA (Honours) and MA degrees, he earned his Barrister-at-Law qualification from Lincoln’s Inn, UK, in 1980.
He practiced law in London until November 1985.
In 1986, he returned to Bangladesh and was enrolled as a lawyer. He was admitted to practice in the High Court Division in 1988 and the Appellate Division in 1994.
In 1990, he established a legal firm named The Law Counsel. Barrister Razzaq became a senior advocate in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court in 2002.
