The Dhaka University branch of Bangladesh Democratic Student Council (BDSC) has protested a rise in extremist activities, and religious fanaticism across the country, which can threaten the country’s sovereignty.
BDSC is a new student platform formed by leaders of last year’s anti-fascist uprising.
Staging a sit-in in front of the Anti-Terrorism Raju Memorial sculpture of Dhaka University on Friday around 8pm, they condemned the recent incidents perpetrated by extremist groups, including the banned Hizb-ut-Tahrir, in Baitul Mukarram areas. They also questioned the failure of the state forces to stop the extremist activities.
They warned the interim government about the attempts of the banned organisation Hizb-ut-Tahrir to destabilise the country through its public programmes.
Abdul Quader, DU convenor of BDSC, said that the religious extremists are abusing freedom achieved through last year’s July-August uprising.
He said, “You are absolutely wrong if you think that our tolerance is weakness. Religious extremism and any extremists will have no place in this country, as they undermine the country’s sovereignty.”
Hasib Al Islam, chief organiser of the student front’s DU branch, said that the outlawed extremists are openly carrying out activities in holy places like Baitul Mukarram, but the state forces have completely failed to suppress these. It was never expected.
Rafia Rehnuma Hridi, spokesperson of the DU branch, said, “Such extremists are promoting extremism by inciting mobs against women using religious sentiments.”
They urged the interim government not to tolerate any religious fanaticism and to eradicate outlawed extremist groups.
