Staff Reporter:
Student leaders who played a key role in the success of the July revolution are now planning to dissolve the coordinator position within the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement nationwide.
Abdul Hannan Masud, the chief coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, said that the coordinator position would be dissolved once a full-fledged committee is established.
Umama Fatema, spokesperson for the movement, told Dhaka Tribune that the full-fledged committee is expected to be formed within two to three weeks.
Previously, on October 22, a convening committee for the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement was announced, with Hasnat Abdullah appointed as the convener and Arif Sohel as the member secretary of the four-member committee.
Masud clarified that while a convening committee has been created, the coordinator position will remain until the full committee is announced.
The platform was initially established on July 1, 2024. Shortly afterward, on July 8, the organization announced a 65-member committee, consisting of 23 coordinators and 42 co-coordinators.
As the movement gained momentum, the organization expanded to a 158-member coordination team on August 3, which included students from various educational institutions nationwide, with 49 coordinators and 109 co-coordinators.
After the ousting of Sheikh Hasina on August 5, reports emerged alleging misconduct by coordinators and others acting under the coordinator title. On October 3, a total of 17 coordinators and co-coordinators from the Jahangirnagar University unit resigned from the 37-member coordination committee.
They cited controversial actions by “some coordinators” at Jahangirnagar University, claiming that these individuals prioritized personal interests through influence and that the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement was starting to resemble the ousted government, contrary to the principles of the mass uprising.
