Legal experts, ICT sector representatives, and media professionals have emphasized the need to protect citizens’ freedom of expression and national security, calling for urgent amendments to the Cyber Securi-ty Law, 2023.
At a roundtable titled “Cyber Security Act: Balancing Security and Freedom of Expression,” organized by the Telecom and Technology Reporters Network Bangladesh (TRNB) and Anwar Technologies at the BRAC Inn Center in Mohakhali yesterday, experts noted that while it is essential to protect the country’s digital infrastructure, ensure online transaction security, and combat cybercrime, national security with citizens’ rights also need to be balanced.
Distinguished guests at the roundtable included ICT secretary Shish Haidar Chowdhury and BTRC Chairman Major General (eetd) Md. Emdad ul Bari.
The meeting was chaired by TRNB President Samir Kumar Dey, with keynote presentations from former TRNB President Rashed Mehedi and a welcome speech by TRNB General Secretary Masuduzzaman Robin. Speakers said that the cyber security law is indispensable yesterday, providing a robust legal framework against threats like hacking and cyber fraud, while also enhancing public trust in online ser-vices.
Concerns were raised about provisions such as blocking digital content and arrests without warrants, which could suppress dissent and limit freedom of expression. Vague terms like “spreading misinfor-mation” could target journalists and critics, undermining citizens’ freedoms. Thus, they called for amendments to these provisions.
Shish Haider Chowdhury emphasized the need for a “policy that does not break the stick while killing the snake,” indicating that the law is being updated. He highlighted transparency in security matters and the importance of responsible communication.
BTRC Chairman Md. Emdad ul Bari discussed the challenges of maintaining a balance in data protection and freedom of expression.
Former BASIS President Syed Almas Kabir stressed raising public awareness and constructive criticism while addressing data privacy concerns in business.
Wayez R. Hossain, co-founder of Anwar Technologies, also spoke at the event.
